Cutaneous Melioidosis Cluster Caused by Contaminated Wound Irrigation Fluid

چکیده
Burkholderia pseudomallei in the tropics. A cluster of 5 cutaneous melioidosis cases occurred in suburban southwest Australia after an earlier case in January 2012. We collected environmental samples at the first patient’s home in January 2012 and from a nearby health center in December 2013 after 2 new cases occurred in the same postal district. We isolated genotypically identical B. pseudomallei from the first patient and 5 other patients in the district. Cutaneous Melioidosis and Necrotizing Fasciitis Caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei
In areas where melioidosis is endemic, stress on the healthcare system is substantial. Because clinical manifestations are protean, the illness is difficult to diagnose, and cutaneous Burkholderia pseudomallei infections can progress to necrotizing fasciitis. While it is and uncommon complication of cutaneous melioidosis, necrotizing fasciitis is potentially fatal and requires aggressive manage...
متن کاملCase cluster shifting and contaminant source as determinants of melioidosis in Taiwan.
OBJECTIVES To assess the geographical distribution of melioidosis contamination sources and the association between the location of melioidosis cases and positive sampling sites for Burkholderia pseudomallei in Taiwan. METHODS Data on the location of melioidosis cases from 2002 to 2011 were combined with the geographical distribution of B. pseudomallei as indicated by the detection of specifi...
متن کاملAirborne Transmission of Melioidosis to Humans from Environmental Aerosols Contaminated with B. pseudomallei
Melioidosis results from an infection with the soil-borne pathogen Burkholderia pseudomallei, and cases of melioidosis usually cluster after rains or a typhoon. In an endemic area of Taiwan, B. pseudomallei is primarily geographically distributed in cropped fields in the northwest of this area, whereas melioidosis cases are distributed in a densely populated district in the southeast. We hypoth...
متن کاملEarly wound irrigation improves the ability to remove bacteria.
BACKGROUND Although most surgeons prefer to treat contaminated wounds as soon as possible, the effect of timing on the ability of irrigation to reduce the amount of bacteria in a wound is not fully known. We evaluated the effect of different delays in irrigation on bacterial removal in an animal model. METHODS A complex musculoskeletal wound was created in the proximal part of the leg of goat...
متن کاملWhole-genome sequencing to investigate a non-clonal melioidosis cluster on a remote Australian island
Melioidosis is a tropical disease caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. Outbreaks are uncommon and can generally be attributed to a single point source and strain. We used whole-genome sequencing to analyse B. pseudomallei isolates collected from an historical 2-year long case cluster that occurred in a remote northern Australian indigenous island community, where infections were p...
